Diffractive optics, are a broad class of optical components which rely on diffraction as opposed to refraction to modify how light propagates. There are many uses of diffractive optics and there are many more applications being developed every day.

Most diffractive optics are used in transmission. Any substrate can be coated to make it reflective or provide an anti-reflection coating. Plastics have a broad range of application from the visible to deep in the IR - some plastics transmit out to 14 microns and are appropriate for human detection (8 micron wavelength for an approximately 330 K blackbody).
